Trade, industry, and professional associations can be excellent sources for facts, statistics, reports, and can be a place to locate contacts to speak with about the industry. Often (but not always) their data and reports are freely available on their websites.

Consulting firms publish industry case studies, industry overviews, and research reports. For example, Deloitte's Insights Industry Outlook reports are available on the Wall Street Journal website.
Local university libraries have access to company financials, marketing reports, industry studies and statistical resources, available to use in their library.
