Frequently Asked Questions

Q: WHAT ARE THE FEATURES OF THE SERVERS? IS THIS LIKE THE FAIRFIELD COUNTY SERVER FROM PRIOR YEARS IN WHICH  MANY TOWNS PARTICIPATED?

A: This is different from the Fairfield County server in a number of ways. These are completely custom-made by a local third party,  as a donation specifically for Westport Library. It is not the Education Edition of Minecraft, but rather the regular Java edition and includes modifications (“plugins”) to enhance gameplay. There are 5 separate servers,  each with a different Minecraft gametype – Creative, Survival, Hub with paintball arena, CoreArena (mob arena with advancements and 5 class roles from which to choose), and Arcade games (currently includes 15 different games). The 5 servers are tied together on a network so there is only one IP to enter.

Q:WHO CAN PLAY ON THE SERVERS?

A: Westport Library patrons ages 11-17, who have their own library card and their parent’s approval.

Q: WHAT EDITION OF MINECRAFT IS NEEDED? WHAT IS THE COST?  CAN I PLAY FROM HOME?

A: You must already have or buy the Minecraft game for $26.95. Yes, you can play from home. You must have the JAVA edition, not the Windows 10 edition or Pocket Edition. You can play on a PC or Mac. You can buy it here: https://www.minecraft.net/en-us/store/minecraft-java-edition/

Q:WHAT IS THE WESTPORT LIBRARY MINECRAFT DISCORD SERVER?

Q:WHAT IS THE WESTPORT LIBRARY MINECRAFT DISCORD SERVER?

A:Discord servers are generally used for gamers to “park” in while they are in a game. Discord has an age minimum of 13. The Westport Library Discord server is the vehicle used to report issues, get Minecraft advice, report players, see server status, find what is new on the Minecraft servers, suggest things you want added to the servers, talk to friends (voice chat or type) and listen to music from YouTube. It is a closed, whitelisted server, only for library patrons. With parental approval, you will be emailed a link to join the Discord server. On the registration form, please be sure you provide the email address you used to sign up for Discord.

Q:WHAT IF I HAVE NEVER PLAYED MINECRAFT BEFORE, IS IT EASY TO FIGURE OUT?

A: Some gametypes are more difficult than others but all the servers include a help menu to get you started. You can also read the online Minecraft WIKI to learn how to play. We expect many players that are brand new to Minecraft and will be happy to answer questions.

Q:WHAT ARE THE MINECRAFT SERVER RULES THAT MUST BE FOLLOWED?

A: These are the rules to which all players must agree or risk being removed from the servers. Additional rules may be added but they can be checked at any time by typing /rules on any server. FOR THE SAFETY OF ALL PLAYERS, THESE RULES ARE STRICTLY ENFORCED.

  • No bullying of other players will be tolerated
  • Any discriminiatory speech or action is not allowed, including but not limited to, expressions of racism, homophobia or sexism
  • Respect staff and other players at all times
  • No hacking, cheating, or using client-side app
  • Don't grief or mess with other players' stuff
  • Spamming the chat and spamming blocks are both considered griefing
  • No swearing or foul language\No advertising or posting links

Q:WILL SERVERS BE OPEN 24/7?

A: No, the servers will be closed late at night and will also close for maintenance when needed.

Q:WILL THE SERVERS BE MONITORED?

A: The servers will be monitored through a combination of in-game admins and logs.

Q:HOW DO KIDS ACCESS THE SERVER?

A: If you join the Discord server, you will be given instructions there. Otherwise, you can contact the admin through westportlibraryminecraft@gmail.com.

Q:ARE THERE ANY FUTURE PLANS FOR THE SERVERS?

A: Definitely! There is already a brand new Surface Studio PC at the library, dedicated to Minecraft and other games, for the use of adults and kids, when the library is open. The PC has an amazing resolution of 4500 X 3000 pixels with a quadcore i7 processor and a 28” screen. The library is considering a separate set of servers for seniors and other adults. Special Minecraft events are also in the planning process. Stay tuned!

Q:WHO DO I CONTACT IF I HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ON THIS?

A:Contact the server administrator at westportlibraryminecraft@gmail.com. Please do not contact the library’s main number for questions concerning the Minecraft servers. They are maintained through a third party.
